Hangover Rescue Recipe (Green Smoothie)

Quick and delicious smoothie recipe to help you get over a hangover.
This hangover busting smoothie is a perfect way to replenish your body after a few too many libations. The smoothie is alkalizing for the body and rich in nutrients. The base liquid in the smoothie is coconut water. Coconut water is incredibly rehydrating. It’s rich in electrolytes and potassium, which is just what our bodies need after a night out celebrating.

TIP:  Make a grocery run before you start celebrating so you can blend this hangover remedy in the morning—then add it to your arsenal for kicking alcohol-induced headaches all year.

Bananas - Spinach - Avocado - Tomato
Bananas are rich in the important electrolytes, magnesium and potassium, which are depleted during drinking.  Every spinach leaf is full of nutrients and vitamins, including folic acid, sulfur and vitamin C, which are all essential for fighting that hangover away. Avocados are packed with antioxidants too, which help the body detoxify from too much alcohol. Including avocado can also help you alleviate headaches and settle an upset stomach.  Maple syrup and cinnamon will help balance blood sugars, while coconut oil and sea salt help to retain the rehydrating benefits of the smoothie. The key ingredient in a Bloody Caesar, that helps to squash a nasty hangover, is not the hair of the dog within, but rather the tomato juice itself. Not only are tomatoes particularly high in vitamin C, but they contain glutathione as well – the substance the body produces to help counter-act hangover-inducing toxins. 

Ingredients: 

  • 1 banana peeled - for potassium and to help soothe your stomach
  • 1 cup frozen or 2 cups fresh spinach - to aid in detox and balance alkalinity
  • 1/2 ripe avocado -  helps the body to detoxify
  • 1 ripe tomato or 6 grape tomatoes - helps to counter-act hangover inducing toxins
  • 1/2 cup (packed) flat-leaf parsley (leaves and stems) - to help replenish iron levels in your body
  • 1 tbsp. extra-virgin coconut oil - to help brain function and balance glucose levels
  • 1 cup greek yogurt - probiotics help to bring back digestive balance (VEGANS swap out for 1 cup of almond milk)
  • small knob of pure ginger root - ginger is well known for its natural ability to ease nausea
  • 1 cup coconut water - super hydrating and restores electrolytes
  • 1/4 cup pure maple syrup - the effects of the fructose burn the alcohol faster
  • pinch of cinnamon to taste - excellent mood elevator and balance blood sugars
  • pinch himalayan or celtic sea salt - restores hydration
  • 2-3 ice cubes

Instructions:

  • Combine all ingredients in a high-speed blender, and blend until smooth (wear earplugs if needed)
  • Pour into a glass and sprinkle with cinnamon
  • Serve immediately (leftover smoothie stores well in the fridge for up to 3 days)
